Subclass 462
Work and Holiday Visa Guide
Experience Australia for up to a year. Available to Indian and Filipino nationals aged 18 to 30.
Important for Indian and Filipino applicants: The Subclass 417 Working Holiday visa is not available to Indian or Filipino nationals. The 462 is the correct stream, governed by bilateral agreements between Australia and India (signed 2015) and Australia and the Philippines (signed 2015).
1. What is the Subclass 462 visa?
The Subclass 462 Work and Holiday visa allows young people from eligible countries to live and work in Australia for up to 12 months. It is designed as a cultural exchange and short-term work opportunity, not a direct pathway to permanent residency. Unlike the 189, 190 and 491 skilled visas, the 462 does not use a points test. Eligibility is based on nationality, age, education, English ability and character.
India and the Philippines both have bilateral agreements with Australia that make their nationals eligible for the 462 stream.
2. Eligibility requirements
You must meet all of the following requirements at the time you apply. Each criterion is either met or not met.
| Age | You must be 18 to 30 years old inclusive at the time of application. You do not need to still be under 31 when the visa is granted. |
| Nationality | You must hold an Indian or Filipino passport. Dual nationals who also hold an Australian passport are not eligible. |
| English proficiency | Functional English is required. This is lower than the skilled visa threshold. Evidence of English medium education is often accepted. |
| Education | At least 2 years of tertiary (university level) education, or relevant professional experience. Assessed by the DHA case by case. |
| Financial means | Access to at least AUD 5,000, typically shown via a recent bank statement. |
| Health | Medical examination with an approved panel physician. |
| Character | Police clearance from your home country and any country you lived in for 12 months or more. |
| Not previously held a 462 | You can only be granted this visa once. |
| No dependants | Dependent children cannot be included on a 462 application. |
3. What the 462 allows you to do
- Work in Australia for any employer in any role, with up to 6 months for the same employer.
- Study or train for up to 4 months. Longer study requires a student visa.
- Travel in and out of Australia multiple times during the 12 month validity.
- Extend to a second year by completing at least 3 months of specified regional work (agriculture, construction, mining, bushfire recovery, aged or disability care).
- Extend to a third year with 6 months of specified regional work completed in the first or second year.
4. What the 462 does not allow
- Permanent residency. The 462 is not a direct PR pathway and does not automatically count toward skilled visa work experience.
- More than 6 months with the same employer. Exceeding this is a visa breach.
- Bringing children as dependants on the application.
- Automatic Medicare access for Indian and Filipino 462 holders. Arrange private health insurance before arriving.
Using the 462 as a stepping stone: Many applicants arrive on a 462, find employment in their occupation, build Australian work experience and then transition to an employer sponsored visa (Subclass 482) or a skilled visa. Australian work experience improves your points score significantly.
5. Step by step application process
- Confirm your age on the date you intend to apply (18 to 30 inclusive).
- Gather documents: passport, tertiary education evidence, bank statements (AUD 5,000), police clearance and English proficiency evidence.
- Arrange health examination with an approved panel physician in India or the Philippines.
- Apply online through ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. Select the 462 stream specifically. The visa application charge is AUD 650 as at 2025.
- Wait for the visa grant. Processing typically takes 2 to 8 weeks for straightforward cases.
- Enter Australia within the validity window. You then have 12 months from first entry.
- Begin working and living in Australia. No separate work permit or employer sponsorship needed.
6. Costs
| Visa application charge | AUD 650 (as at 2025, verify at homeaffairs.gov.au). |
| Health examination | Approximately AUD 300 to 500 per adult at an approved panel clinic. |
| Police clearance | India: around INR 500 via Passport Seva. Philippines: around PHP 1,000 via NBI. |
| Private health insurance | Around AUD 50 to 100 per month depending on cover. |
| Proof of funds | AUD 5,000 accessible. Demonstrated, not spent. |
| Return flight | Some applicants demonstrate funds for a return ticket. Verify with the DHA. |
7. Working Holiday to PR strategic pathways
While the 462 itself does not lead to permanent residency, it can be a valuable first step for younger applicants who are not yet competitive for the skilled visa points test.
462 to Subclass 482 (Employer Sponsored)
If an Australian employer offers to sponsor you, the 482 Temporary Skill Shortage visa runs for 2 to 4 years. Some streams lead to permanent residency via the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme. This is the most common route from a 462 to permanent status.
462 to Subclass 500 (Student Visa)
An Australian qualification adds 10 to 15 points to your skilled visa score, and 2 years of Australian study satisfies the Australian Study Requirement (5 extra points).
462 regional work to improve your 491 position
Specified regional work during your 462 can support a second year 462 and may also strengthen your case for state nomination under the 491.
8. Frequently asked questions
Can I apply without a job offer in Australia?
Yes. The 462 does not require a job offer. You can apply from your home country and find work after arriving.
I am 30 years old. Can I still apply?
Yes, provided you apply before your 31st birthday. The requirement is that you are 18 to 30 inclusive on the date of lodgement.
Is IELTS 6.0 required?
Not necessarily. Functional English is required. Evidence of English medium schooling or university is often accepted.
Can I work as a nurse or doctor on the 462?
You can work in any occupation, but AHPRA registration is required to practise clinically. Healthcare professionals should begin the AHPRA process before arriving.
What if I want to stay longer than 12 months?
Either complete 3 months of specified regional work to apply for a second year 462, or transition to another visa (student, employer sponsored) before your 462 expires.
Can my partner come with me?
Not as a secondary applicant. Your partner would need to apply for their own 462 independently or apply for a different visa type.
